Bedrooms are not simply places to fall asleep – they can offer you great flexibility in the way you live too. Whether you are after a compact home or a multi-level six-bedder, utilising your bedrooms in the smartest way possible makes a big difference to your family’s sense of space, comfort and privacy. Here are a few things to consider.
1. Bed-free bedrooms
Just because a bedroom is called a bedroom doesn’t mean it needs to be a bedroom. You may need three rooms for sleeping – but consider what a fourth could mean. It could be a private office, a relaxing reading room, prayer room, yoga and exercise room, kids’ play room or even a walk-in closet. Don’t be limited into the traditional use of a bedroom in your new home.
2. Always welcome
If you (or your children) have friends or family staying over regularly, consider setting up a permanent spare guest room. By doing that, you will be able to keep other rooms clear of clutter and save yourself time and effort in putting together a place every time someone stays over. A guest room also makes guests feel even more welcome – and it can even work as a nap room for guests on a Sunday afternoon after lunch!
3. Position and perspective
Do you want to look out of big windows or onto a terrace to enjoy the view when you wake up? Or do you prefer to sleep in a room that lets in less natural light? When you’re looking at homes, keep in mind which bedroom would work for which family member. Also think about what is on the other side of the bedroom walls – do you want to be next to a teenager’s bedroom for example?
4. Look and feel
Once you have chosen your home, you can think about the best way to create the perfect bedrooms for everyone in the house. Some key things to remember are: choose soothing subtle shades over bright or intense colours; think about adding some texture when you have the ceiling painted (you’ll be looking at it more than in any other room!), choose the right size furniture – something heavy and solid will overpower a smaller room; and keep the space uncluttered with plenty of storage.
Make sure you ask the builders at HomeWorld display villages for their advice of how to plan the best bedrooms in your dream home.
